Ash Wednesday - 1st Night Without FaceBook (FB)

This is the first of many blog entries about my journey through the Lenten season without FB. I think I should first start by explaining what Lent is:

The 40 days of Lent are like the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness in spiritual preparation, struggling with Satan, and choosing God's will - the way of the cross. Events of Lent include Ash Wednesday, five Lent Sundays, Palm Sunday, and Holy Week.

I decided that during Lent I would give up FB because I spend so much time using it. I also said that I would give up drinking Coke but after attending Ash Wednesday service, I realized that not drinking Coke does nothing to draw me closer to God. That is the purpose of giving something up for Lent, to make a sacrifice that draws you closer to God.

So giving up sodas, cookies, candy, & red meat may be a sacrifice to your flesh but will that really draw you closer to God? Some of my FB friends of friends mentioned they were giving up cussing/cussin'. This is something good to give up but I was shocked that so many people felt the need to give it up. I did not know that people still did a lot of cursing/cussin' anymore.

This evenings Pastor said that you should not give up something that you will go back to. I do plan to go back to FB but I will not be spending as much time on it. I gave it up for Lent because I realize that a great deal of the time I spend on FB I could be spending getting closer to God or doing something within the Five fold ministry (Worship, Mission & Outreach, Evangelism, Fellowship, and Discipleship).

So in conclusion I am still giving up FB but I will be drinking Coke for the next 40 days. With prayer and Coke I will make it through. Until next time. I love ya and remember to keep God first and....
